The Casting Couch: A Toxic Tradition of Abuse and Exploitation

The “office” where Dargan Birchmore Watts Jr pinned me down and raped me while I creid. He called offering me singing work after.

The entertainment industry has long been plagued by a dark secret: the casting couch. This euphemism for sexual exploitation and abuse has been perpetuated by powerful individuals who prey on vulnerable aspiring actors, singers, and models. The promise of professional work and support is dangled like a carrot, enticing victims to compromise their boundaries and sacrifice their well-being.

I know this pain firsthand. I was deceived and raped by Dargan Birchmore Watts Jr who baited me with singing opportunities. The trauma and betrayal I experienced are still very raw, and the fact that my rapist is suing me for speaking out (but LOSING) is a stark reminder of the systemic failures that enable these abusers.

But I'm not alone. Countless others have suffered similar abuses, and the #MeToo movement has brought attention to this pervasive issue. Brave survivors are sharing their stories, naming their abusers, and demanding change.

The power dynamics at play are stark. Predators in positions of authority wield their influence to manipulate and coerce, leaving victims feeling powerless and trapped. The fear of unbelief, retaliation, blacklisting, or damage to one's career keeps many from speaking out.

But we must speak out. We must dismantle the casting couch culture and create a safe, equitable environment for all. This requires accountability, education, and a commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals.

Let's work together to shatter the silence and shame surrounding casting couch abuse. Let's create an industry where talent and merit are the only currencies that matter.
